 I've been thinking for a while now that users should be rewarded for being active members of this community, and that they should be encouraged to support one-another and contribute. Therefore, I think that this forum should be given a form of currency, not real money of course, be it 'Coins' or anything else people can creatively think up. And every time you post, you are given some 'Coins' to be put in your virtual wallet that's displayed under everybody's avatar showing how many you have.

When you accumulate enough, you can even get rewarded in perhaps a 'Toad House' tab on the Menu Bar atop every page. This is a sort-of shop that allows you to spend Coins on virtual upgrades to your experience, such as allowing more than one image in your signature (still size restricted), the ability to customize the layout yourself more to your tastes (which is client viewed only, such as change the red buttons to blue or something) or even expand your profile picture size to up to 200x200 pixels, the more pixels you want, the more coins it costs. I don't know, just some ideas thrown out there and there are plenty more possibilities too. But I think they can add more depth to this forum.

Obviously loopholes will have to be ironed out, to stop people from quadruple posting single word posts onto every topic. I think say, the more you type in a reply, the more Coins you earn. Since the site is still moderated to ensure that spamming is non-existent and people aren't copy/pasting huge blocks of text to earn Coins quickly. Coins will then allow users to be more constructive and less lazy when replying to others and encourage them to give their opinions.

I personally think it could work well as a system when RVLution gets updated, but I need to hear other members and mods/ admins opinions too. Do you think it's a good idea? If not, are there any changes you would make to the 'Coins' (or any other name really) system? Thanks for hearing from me!

 This Idea is abstract, since I don't know any Foums using
such Currencies. Also you're thinking a bit too easy about it. It'd
require quite some coding to iron out all of these Loopholes. One could simply
write "oiwseth wsthlkswertjhw swrtghkwrth wrtijsrzhis srthw4thw5thw wer4thz w5
srthzw4 s4trhzw4zujw5zj drtzhewrtzje5juwe5zu e5hj" and get 10 Coins for that. :?
But maybe we can make use of that. For example you have to pay for Multi-Posts.
The more Posts in a Row, the higher the Charge. Or a Charge for using words,
like "Shit", "Asshole" etc. That'd encourage Users ot to use Swear Words.
Of Course also "intelligent" Insults need to be prohibited, e. g.:

...anthropomorphic piles of radioactive waste...
or "Butt Opening".

 That sounds like a good idea, but charging to curse is a bit too extreme. And charging to double-post is kinda' pointless because it's frowned upon and unnecessary, however a fine would be a good consequence. Besides, if you see anyone post gibberish to earn cash just report it, and a mod/ admin can remove that post and refund the Coins they earned.

 I thought of something like a ranking system like there is on StackOverflow, if people like the post they can give something like a thumbs up and if they dislike it they can give it a thumbs down. When you get thumbs up you get more points and if you get more points you get more privileges. If people dislike you lose some points.

And doesn't this fit better in Site Discussions?

It does. But you know how much sense of on-topic-ness the average RVLution user has...

Also, RVLution 2.0 isn't even done yet, we'll think about that kind of stuff when it's actually live. We don't even know what we'll end up using as a board software if it gets done... but it sure as hell won't be phpBB.

 Actually I thought this was best suited to the Off-Topic forum. It was simply an idea and isn't completely groundbreaking to be thoroughly discussed as an inclusion to the site. Oh, and great way to insult almost the entire population of RVLution that you moderate Mega-Mario. Quite the innovative way to be a role-model if you ask me. /Sarcasm.

And yeah Mario64, it's great in theory. That's the entire point I made this thread, to improve upon the idea and develop it and see how many people were interested. It's totally irreverent that RVLution 2.0 is far away, that's no reason to not discuss any theoretical new features that can be thought out and included further down the line.

It's not meant as an insult. Just look around and see how often people go offtopic in threads.


I also think that this thread is better here. The offtopic forum is better suited for all kinds of non-serious discussion apparently.

 Okie dokie, it's fine. But I can't argue the fact that the 'Off-Topic board' is essentially every board on here anyway. XD

I just thought this was Off-Topic the most, and it's not a huge factor that will change the way we see RVLution or anything, just a possible idea that can be improved upon. However this is a more serious thread rather than people's favorite Youtubers or flame-wars about religion. But I guess we're being Off-Topic here talking about being Off-Topic, so I'll change it back to the currency conversation. ^^

 I'm glad the concept seems to be pretty popular at least! But isn't there anything else people would like to add? For example, what more of a use could virtual currency actually have and what other things in the shop could we spend it on?

I thought of:
- A different (by mods/admins predefined) colour. I.e. 5000 "coins" for a golden name, but 750 for a blue one.
- The ability to create private threads. I.e. You make a private thread so you can discuss stuff for your hack and you don't want other people too see it. (I heard Ninjifox is working on this for RVLution 2.0)
- Raise the amount of attachments in one post. I.e. 100 "coins" for 2, 400 "coins" for 3, 800 "coins" for 4 and 1600 "coins" for 5.
- Changing the layout of your personal post (as done on kuribo64)

And I thought of a way to earn the "coins":

When you post something, you automatically earn 1 "coin". But, people can give a thumbs up/yeah/like or whatever to show they think the post is really useful, and then, the creator of the post earns 10 "coins" for every thumbs up/yeah/like or whatever. A mod is always able to view and delete the amount of earned coins if he thinks it's a troll with multiple accounts, wanting to raise the earned "coins" unfairly. When you double post, you lose 200 "coins", triple posting gives a reward ( :? ) of -400 "coins" and so on.

I hope this were useful ideas, I tried to give trolls the lowest chances possible to give themselves coins earned on an unfair way.

 I really adore those ideas Grop! Especially the different coloured names, it can help differentiate who is more of a 'seasoned' member therefore who new members should ask for help. They all sound worth a purchase and not just pointless/ restricted by admins just because they can restrict them. And like I said before, a fine for double posting seems to be a good deterrent for people to a stop spamming.

Regarding the thumbs up for coins situation that also sounds really nice! But I think that thumbs up should be a bonus of extra coins for posting something long and worthwhile for a lot of coins anyway. Which once again gives more incentive to be a valued member of the community and encourages others to give their opinion on what people say (in the form of likes, etc) I personally think it's better to be used in conjunction with the 'longer the post, the more coins you earn' theory than on its own. But I really do love the idea.

So thanks for all the contributions! I really liked them and hope others here like all this too. xD

Thanks for the compliments! Though it might be a lot of work to implement...

I had an idea about the "coin". I propose we call it a "Toad Coin" (since you can spend it in the Toad House Shop)

Yes, I think that's a good idea too. The only point (IMO) is that it needs lots of moderating to prevent trolls from just posting entire help texts to earn Toad Coins. And, you may have for example made an awesome discovery in NSMBW hacking, but you explain it in just a few words and some screenshots. That won't be much Toad Coins, but if you're giving your opinion about a hack and you give pro's and con's level by level, it will be worth much Toad Coins, but you're not as contributing as in the other example.

I think the best solution is combining those, and have the mods more active to keep it reasonable, but I don't want i.e. Skawo to moderate this forum all day since that won't be healthy and fair. Maybe they (the admins and mods) can dicide to make some active members to mods too, so the "workload" is divided.

 I wouldn't say that we need more mods for just one board exactly, but employing more moderators as a standard would improve the quality if the posts. But Grop said that some people may only post a few lines for their 'major discovery' and not get much money, but with a currency in place it would probably encourage them to actually write more and explain their new theory in more depth.

Also, I agree with Mario64 too. I think if you click how the amount of Coins/ Toad Coins/ etc below a user's avatar a transaction screen can come up. Then here you can say how much cash you want to send and can attach a small message to it, which will then go through to their PM Inbox saying what happened. This means that it can have more uses between users, say if someone artistic designs and draws a new signature image and avatar for me, we can negotiate that say, costs 60 coins and I transaction them.

Yes, that's a good idea. Perhaps we should give a fine if you violate any of the rules mentioned in Jason's topic and reward you if you've read them. I think it's funny to give people some extra money on their birthday as present. I think (just like Mario64) a starting amount of 100 is good.

I get Cash on my Birthday in Real Life as well. Mostly by my Family in America, because
I never wish for something. This Christmas, we went to America and I brought 170$ with
me. When I came back, I had a total of 728$.
