I recently got hold of Mario Party 9, and have been looking at the compression method that is used. After some experimenting, I've ended up with the following results...

Mario Party 9 uses a newer revision of the LZ77 encoder; -lex. You need the same ntcompress.exe that Mario Sports Mix uses if you want to decompress and recompress these files. For the coding used to recompress...

ntcompress -lex -o [compressed file] [decompressed file]

Now I have yet to confirm that this stuff works, but those hacked screenshots may be enough to prove all of this. Anyway, it's probable that I'll do texture hacks for Mario Party 9 too, but for now, I'm just going through the different files to see what's in them; for example, where all the character icons and portraits are stored.

Uh, I've been able to do this for about a month. You just use LZ11 to decompress the files and open them with SZS Modifier. Edit the file and/or textures in it, recompress and there you go. Pretty simple stuff.

Me and LordKhon have made texture hacks for pretty much every character and I've made a Green Car for Toad Road. Minigames and Boards are also hackable and I'm working on a Lava version of the minigame Bomb Barge.

LZ11? Am I missing something here?

Anyway, I have been doing a setup for my first potential Mario Party 9 hack. It's for Yoshi, and it involves more than simply editing Yoshi's body and head textures. In other words, I'm also targeting Yoshi's icons and portraits, which means that I have to go through several files, and make several texture edits to the portraits too; I've managed to cover a major portion of that objective, but it's possible that I might've overlooked something during the process.

I'll likely show previews of my work later. Keep note though that I only had the game for a few days, so I don't have access to all the game modes yet.

Yes you are!
If you are compressing/ decompressing many MP9 files at once, typing out that compression method each time is ridiculous. You just drag the file to the LZ11 exe, press 0 to decompress, open the same file in SZS Modifier, mod, then recompress again by dragging the file to it and pressing 1. Takes a combined time of 10 seconds or less to compress/ decompress together.

I like that fact you are editing icons though! I haven't really figured out how to yet, as it proberbally involves HEX editing. Keep up the great work though! Lookin' forward to what you create! So far only including charactes nothing else i've made: Ice Waluigi, Red yoshi, Emo Birdo EmO (get it? ), Blue Koopa, Blue Shy Guy and Green Kamek from the Paper Mario games.

I can teach you how to use LZ11, as it is FAR more efficient, easy and reliable (typing a spelling error with Command Prompt and having to type the whole line out again for your method.) and you can teach me how to edit character icons. It's a great cycle of helpfulness!

I have a sneak peek of my work posted in the following link...

http://forums.kc-mm.com/index.php?topic=3302.msg889442#msg889442

I have the work classified as a spoiler, and unfortunately, these forums don't have a way to hide spoilers.

I'll eventually display actual screenshots of the work here though.

Nice! You're Red Yoshi's superior to mine since mine is too bright. i mean REALLY bright.
Plus the fact yours has icons while mine is a texture hack of Yoshi, nothing else. xD
Looking forward to release!

Well again it hasn't been tested yet. While I do have most of the icon and portrait locations down, I just have to write down the offset placements for those textures.

And yes, you will need to have a hex editor, as a good deal of the portraits are CI8 textures; the SZS Modifier can't replace textures that use palettes; CI4 (C4), CI8 (C8), CI14x2.

Of course, other portraits and icons are merely TEX0 files that are stored inside BRRES files.

Whoa! seems like allot more work than I expected it to be. xD I'll give portrait hacking a go but I think I'll remain dorment in my Comfort Zone.
Yeah, LordKhon, I know how you feel, I tried to do something like that before, failed totally.

Trust me when I say it's not a walk in the park, especially once you get to the language-specific files.

After all, the offset placements for the English textures can be completely different from the offset placements for the French and Spanish textures.

Additionally, the portraits and icons are not completely identical, so this does mean that you have to edit many different images of each character's mugshot.

Anyway, I've gotten the offset placements down for almost all of Yoshi's icons and portraits, so I'm pretty close to test time.

Out of curiosity, what does your Red Yoshi look like? You mentioned that it was too bright.

Anyway, I just need to do some more tests before considering a release.

Here's one of it's textures. In-game it's really bright.
None of my others have that problem, only really needs to be broguht down in intensity! xD
Out of curiosity, will you be uploading icon replacement tutorials like the Wii Remote Curser, I love what you did with it!

Odd. Yours looks almost completely identical to mine.

Anyway, I did create text documents that tell you which .tex0 and .tpl files go with which .brres.lz and .arc.lz files, along with the offset placements and data sizes. I've also covered the offset placements for the French and Spanish languages.

However, considering that the offset placements are not always the same for each language, I don't think my text documents will be of any use for the PAL users; I own the NTSC-U version of the game.

In terms of the readme tutorial, it hasn't been made yet, but I'll get to it soon.

Awwww. That's a bummer considering I own the PAL version (I live in the UK). There IS a difference between mine and yours. Mine has some blue spots at the top-right corner of the image and my Yoshi's Shoes are a lighter colour. Still, pity I may not be able to edit some icons. ;/
