you'll have to fiddle around with cygwin for a while, there's no scripts to set this up for you. if someone writes some, feel free to post them. we all dev on nice OSes

I wouldn't mind dual-booting Linux with my Windows 7 installation but only if I don't have to mess up my hidden backup partition... last time I tried a Linux Live CD I couldn't get the keyboard to work, but that was a PC and this is a laptop...

Recommendations? Debian? or Ubuntu? or Mint? ... I haven't used Linux before so the best combination of compatibility with ease-of-use is probably the best bet.

all three are fine. debian is the base of ubuntu which is the base of mint

if you plan on doing more with the linux cd, then mint is nice as it comes with proprietary stuff to make it more friendly. if jsut for this then debian is a smaller footprint

I have got a bunch of questions:
What's riiv.xml, all it contains is a bunch of <Memory Offset=xxxxxx value=xxxxx/> tags.
The same with ocarina.txt, what am I supposed to do with this?

Nothing, just leave it. The riiv.xml and ocarina.txt offer an alternate way of loading in direct to memory patches defined in the yaml files other than the newer loader.

And what are object.plf and linkmap.map?

The object.plf file I dunno what's it is for, I forget, but presumably deals with objects. Ignore it, I don't think we ever used it ever. The limkmap defines the absolute memory address of functions defined by kamek's linker, and the relative memory address of a function you compiled within the newer code bins. In combination with OSReports, you can use the linkmap to determine and debug which function was being called when/if Newer crashes. So basically, don't touch it, just leave it there.

Why is the size of loader.bin, dlcode.bin and dlrelocs.bin different from the Newer download? I didn't change anything in Newer's source code.

We did. Before releasing the source code, we cleaned up a lot of headers, switched over from our closed source compiler to the open source llvm/clang so that everyone could use it, and modified some code to make it nicerish.

Why is there a loader.bin for every region? Newer only has one. Should it work when I put all these files into the NeweRes folder? Do I have to put loader.bin in the NeweRes folder too or do I replace the existing one?

As detailed in the makeNewerKP script I mentioned, you should...

  • Copy then_<region>_loader.bin for your region, and rename it to System<region>.bin
  • Copy then_<region>_dlcode.bin for your region, and rename it to DLCode<region>.bin
  • Copy then_<region>_dlrelocs.bin for your region, and rename it to DLRelocs<region>.bin

Where region converts to strings as detailed in the script (pal == EU_1, ntsc == US_1).

Place those renamed files into your NewerRes folder. If you're just testing, you only need to do the ones for the region of game you're testing on. If you're releasing the game, you should do it for all regions. Seriously, take a look at the makeNewerKP bash script as suggested in the tutorial, and once you understand it modify the paths and commands to suit your setup. Then you can just run the script each time you want Newer to compile, and everything will be rosy. There are plenty of other example scripts (all starting with 'make') showing different setups we've used for different projects. We also both have personal bash scripts that do things like build Newer, copy it to a riifs folder, boot riivolution via wiiload and launch riifs. Or ones that build the whole thing to a dolphin setup and launch it. Play around with the scripts to get something that works for you.

Thank you very much.
A script that starts up Dolphin or Riifs won't work. Riifs takes very long to load Newer and I have Dolphin on a Windows computer, but I compiled Newer on Mac. I do it either by putting the files on the sd card and then copy them from the sd card to the Windows computer or I put it into the Wii U and lauch Riivolution from there (not RiiFS). I'm not releasing anything, I haven't even done something with the sources yet. If it works, I'll try to modify some simple things first like changing the speed of the Shy Guy.

Around line 171 in levelspecial.cpp are the gravity settings. Those are always fun.

I don't think anyone has succesfully done this on Windows, so they can't make a tutorial.

Haven't people done that for Windows? They've made EXE's of the Tools and can run it from source. What is the Newer Source?

Kamek is for Mac and Linux, but if you do it right, you can also use it on Windows.
Mario64, afaik not, dj_skual tried but I don't think he was able to. I can make an exe of Kamek but you'll still need LLVM/Clang and that I think is the problem. Newer Source is the source code (C++ and PowerPC asm) that you can modify and then compile to make your own hacks.

Thanks Kamek64! I hope you make a exe version for windows! Do I still need to install DevKitPPC?

Yes, I will make an exe when you installed DevKitPPC, LLVM and Clang.

Can you give the links for DevkitPPC LLVM and Clang too?

LLVM
Clang
DevKitPro (contains DevKitPPC).

And:
http://www.giyf.com/

I have no idea how to install LLVM and Clang correctly on Windows (is there svn for Windows?).
