For lack of a better name, this is Player Distance Mod, a small Newer mod that shows your progress as you move through a level. Though the graphics are simple and levels must be edited for it to actually work, this mod is proof that there are still users able to create NSMBW mods who are also still interested.
To use this mod, you can download the ZIP file below and then copy all of the files within the folder called "CompiledFiles" to within the folder called "NewerRes" in an existing installation of Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii. These files should replace files that are already there. (Some files there will be unchanged.) Then you should be able to play Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii the same way you usually do, except that translations may not work.
For this version, levels must be edited to show the mod where the beginning and the end of a zone are. The mod is actually an edit to the "Magic Platform" sprite (number 169) that shouldn't affect its Newer function. To make a level work with this mod, you can place one of these sprites at the beginning. Then change the "Collision" mode and note which digit of the raw data this changes. If you make this digit 8, then the mod will calculate distance using the Pythagorean Theorem, taking into account both the player's x and y coordinates. If you make it 9, then only the x-position is used, and if you make it the letter 'a' (which is 10 in base 16) only the y-position is used. These three settings are to make the mod work with flat levels, tower-type levels, and levels in between. After that, you can place a Location at the end of the level (only the position of the top-left corner matters), and change the Magic Platform's "Location ID" setting to match it.
The obligatory two screenshots are attached. One is a screenshot of a test level, and the other is a "simulated screenshot" of what the mod should look like.
The mod supports multiple players, and each player gets its own colored progress bar, stacked so that player 1's is on top, followed by player 2's, etc.
EDIT: The test level and a small README file with instructions and copyright information are included in the download. Also, can anyone think of a better name?
EDIT 2: Just to be clear, this mod is designed to be used with Newer and in its present form cannot be used without Newer.

Oh, I forgot to make that clear… you can only use it with a Newer hack. I used Newer as a base, because without Kamek (Newer's compiling tool) I would not know how to edit a sprite in C++ and then compile that into something Riivolution can use.
I guess it would be possible to take everything except my mod out of Newer and then compile it, and in that way use it without Newer, but that would be a lot of work.

Not yet. So far I'm the only one who has downloaded it, and I'd like to get some comments from people who have tested it to make improvements. After that, maybe.

What do those screens show? Do the wooden blocks have anything to do with it? I'm confused. _________________________ Join the Yoshi Land Wii model/level team today! (INFO IN MY BIO)

I don't have a good way to give real in-game screenshots, so the Reggie screenshot is of the test level I made. The top zone has three pipes to get to the test zones. In the bottom three zones, the top-left corners of the wooden blocks mark the corners and halfway points of where this mod measures distance. You can see in each of these test zones the sprite 169 that marks the start, and the Location that marks the end. In the first of these zones, Euclidean distance is used; in the second, the player's x-position; and in the third, the player's y-position.
The other "screenshot" shows what this mod looks like in-game, if you imagine the black background as what is normally shown during the game. The red bar represents how far Mario is in the level, the blue bar is for Blue Toad, and the green bar is for Luigi. Blue Toad is about halfway through the level, Mario is behind, and Luigi is ahead.
It makes more sense if you play the test level. It would be nice if someone played it and recorded it, but I don't have the means to do that.
