Warning: Wii System Menu Update 4.3

Warning: Wii System Menu Update 4.3

Postby Aaron on Tue Jun 22, 2010 2:37 am

It's been 9 months since the last Wii System Menu update. We finally get 4.3 today and what does it do? Absolutely nothing useful.

This new update was put out solely to combat homebrew.
It kills the Homebrew Channel. It kills Bannerbomb. It kills Riivolution.

So if you're using any homebrew, Riivolution, or playing custom New Super Mario Bros. Wii levels we'd suggest not updating at the moment. We'll let you know when updates are available and it's safe to update your Wii without losing homebrew capabilities.

See Omega's comment below if you're interested in exactly what the update blocks, and the new Error 004.

They threw in a new error code: 004 "The error code you received indicates the system is attempting to load unauthorized software. Unauthorized modifications to save data or program files may impair game play or the Wii console and should be removed."

From the looks of it it seems that the 004 error is displayed when bannerbomb is detected.

Our friend crediar also informed us that they check for HAXX, JODI, DVDX, DISC and DISK.
crediar updated with SNEEK and is checking it out. A screenshot from crediar: http://imm.io/KtK

They also mothballed IOS 254 along with 22 other IOS changes.

I don't have the homebrew channel installed, or riivolution installed as a channel (by clicking install), and I wont put the sd card in, is it safe to update?

Hiccup - I take it you use riivolution using the bannerbomb exploit? Bannerbomb doesn't work in 4.3 so you shouldn't update... if you want to use the shop channel there is a program that will install the newer shop channel without 4.3. If you update, you would have to run homebrew through another exploit - the most common is Stack Smash, but it must be run from SSBB. And there's no guarantee that it would work either.
And I heard that launching from the Riivolution channel gives you error 004. In short: If you want your hax, DO NOT UPDATE!

I run bannerbomb from the sd card which loads riivolution directly.
Are you saying that Bannerbomb installs/changes something?

I DO NOT have the riivolultion channel installed!

I will only attemted to run bannerbomb once this problem is sorted out

So can I update?
Even if I have no HBC, sd card in the wii or riivolultion installed will the update still cause problems?

afaik, 4.3 WILL NOT allow you to install the current homebrew channel or run Riivolution 1.02. Now, Riivolution was just updated to 1.03 for System Menu 4.3, so I suppose if you ran it using Stack Smash then immediately put your Riivolution-hacked game in the disc drive, you can continue using Riivolution (and install it as a channel if you wish). If you don't install the channel you'd have to run SSBB every time (because Stack Smash is an exploit in SSBB)... I wouldn't update but it's your call.

BANNERBOMB SIMPLY DOES NOT WORK!

Edit: It's not that it will cause problems even if you did have the HBC, your sd card in the wii and riivolultion installed, it's just that it'll delete homebrew and make using it much more difficult. At least until we crack it, my bets are by Saturday we'll have it down.

Sigh.
I DO NOT have anything installed as far as I know unless running riivolution or bannerbomb installed something so is it safe?

Sure it's safe. You just won't be able to use Bannerbomb.
(Also, for the record, you could also install the Riivolution channel before updating. You don't technically need to do the Brawl/Indiana exploit dance if you haven't updated yet.)

I know... what's the problem? It's safe, however homebrew will be harder to use. For convenience you should just install the Riivolution 1.03 channel as Aaron suggested. (It won't be deleted)

So does Nintendo have the hackers stumped this time or something? I remember the last firmware upgrade was squashed in about a day by a Homebrew Channel update.

Hope Sin & Punishment 2 doesn't force us to update...

Waninkoko update 4.3
if you installed update 4.3 and lost HBC but have forwarders installed like WIIMC or USB Loader GX or even Uloader you can do the following also:
Download the 4.3 Fix
Place in or your SD Card
Take 4.3b update (boot.dol) and place it in the WIIMC folder on your SD. Located in your apps folder
Boot your WII and start WIIMC and you will be able to install the 4.3b that does not delete HBC
Remove SD card and place WAD manager (boot.dol) into WIIMC folder als HBC.wad in the WAD folder. You will prompt to replace file (boot.dol), yes will do.
Start WII, Wad Manager starts
Install HBC and you are done

I'd have to advise against installing HBC through a WAD file. In such a situation it would be easier to replace the DOL on SD with a different loader, for example loadmii. If you want the HBC, wait until Team Twiizers release the next version of the Hackmii Installer, it won't be much longer.

You're right
The difference is that installing the HBC.WAD will bring back the HBC "shorcut" right back on the dashboard

Well, from what I read, 4.3 does detect HBC but not Riivolution, so I guess the HBC developers gotta change HBC's title ID or something, and it'll work again.

About BannerBomb, that error looks like Nintendo are trying to detect the Bannerbomb specifically instead of fixing the exploit that lets you run code.

So yeah, I do think this update is definitely not the end of Wii homebrew; we just gotta wait until our homebrew software are updated...

But well, I don't know the details of how WiiOS 4.3 works and advanced technical shiz, so I may just be completely wrong; but seeing how Nintendo code their WiiOS thing, it sure will take a while before homebrew are completely blocked. (but then there are modchips which would be harder to block at software level :P )

I just tried to update my wii, planning to repatch it with smashstack. Well, I ran the update, but when I turned it back on, The Homebrew Channel and riivolution were still there and intact. :? I really don't know what to say, other than Nintendo's lazyness with the update just saved me 2 mins of work.

Edit: Oh, and the new version of hackmii is out. Thought you might want to know that. ;) Check here for the details.

The 4.3 update will not remove the latest version of the Homebrew Channel (1.0.7) however it is still recommended that you do not update through Nintendo directly. Use Pimp My Wii to get the latest IOS versions.

So if I want to update to 4.3 do I just delete my current versions of HBC, Riivolution, ect. from my SD card and replace them with the newest versions of HackMii and everything?

If so, how do I get everything installed and working properly?
