Custom Grassland by enixd

This is my first attempt at making a custom tile set. I put it as nohara, to replace the standard grass tile set in order for the grass and flowers to work. I'll upload a version without them so you don't have to loose the standard grass.

About the tile set: Made with gimp. On my tv it looked a little too dark (one cannot underestimate the value of tv testing). If people think it's too dark, I can maybe raise the brightness. Please test it. Also, if there are mistakes, just say so. Enjoy ;)

Kind of icky, but it shows effort... 6/10.

I don't know how hard it was to make it. In any case it really looks custom ;) . Maybe there are some special functions in Gimp which allow to make this easy?

It can't be made completely from scratch because the grass and fence is original.

@joietyfull64 Apart from those, it is custom. If Treeki or anyone else releases info on how to create your own, or at least info on hex editing so it works with a custom name, then we're forced to use the standard ones.
As far as working in Gimp is concerned, it has no special functions-none that set it apart from Photoshop. It is just drawing. But the more interesting thing to note is the skeptical tone you take. It appears that this community is, sadly to say, full of immature and adolescent individuals who seem to forget that this is supposed to be a communal project, and not a place to measure your ego. It is no surprise then, that serious projects are handled mostly by the same people, and most others are just useless. I say useless because you do nothing but complain, try to find faults, and generally don't do nothing productive. I don't mean you personally joiety.

Note, for example, that this custom tileset has such a low score, no productive comments but one, and no discussion other than it's icky or that I may be lying when I say that I made it. At the same time, the Kirby tile set I ported got a much higher score, more discussion and suggestions. The score doesn't interest me; what does interest me is why should I share it at all, if some individuals are going to crap all over it just because it is custom.

Great job on the tileset man, the colors are a bit murky for my taste, but it looks quite well and shows a lot of effort put into the tileset. I do not have any really productive comments on what you could change to make the tileset even better, but at least I can aknowladge your hard work and and value you it. I'll give it an 8/10.

@Void007, I appreciate the comment. The colors are dark because I made the TS on my laptop, on which it looks much lighter. I didn't notice it till I tested it out on my TV. I'll try and raise the brightness without losing the detail, otherwise I guess it can be used as a night TS or dark jungle or something...

@Void007 I agree. It is really hard work to do this (respect).

@enixd I hate me for that I write (you won't think it but it is so and you won't believe it, I would write the same things to me if I was you.) Unfortunately I can't delete comments. If I could do it then there would be so much to do. I already noticed that my comments can be read so that they sound mean :( . (I could use smileys ...)
I think sentences, which sound to be true, are:
"It appears that this community is, sadly to say, full of immature and adolescent individuals who seem to forget that this is supposed to be a communal project, and not a place to measure your ego."
" I say useless because you do nothing but complain, try to find faults, and generally don't do nothing productive."

ADD:
"Note, for example, that this custom tileset has such a low score, no productive comments but one, and no discussion other than it's icky or that I may be lying when I say that I made it. At the same time, the Kirby tile set I ported got a much higher score, more discussion and suggestions."
Did you think I thought that you "lied"?

"it has no special functions-none that set it apart from Photoshop"
Do you mean just filters with special functions (are they called so) or also every basic functions (adding forms, transparency, recolour possibility and sharpness)?

"what does interest me is why should I share it at all, if some individuals are going to crap all over it just because it is custom."
Was it me? Then excuse me.

@joietyfull64, I think Photoshop has more filters than Gimp-that said, I only use the gaussian blur. Other filters tend to destroy the initial design. Best way to practice is try to draw the original grass. That way you'll learn how to use shadows to create the depth, practice how to create the slopes, getting the correct sizes, etc. The first thing I always do is to configure the grid, 24x24 pixels, view the grid and snap to. When drawing something, always draw one 24x24 square in a separate window, then when you want to test it, just copy it to the original and see how it goes.

You can't do that for slopes
It won't fit with the rest of the picture...
Or you know exactly where (for example) grass stops and land begins ?
enixd posted at 11:59:36 am, 18 Mar 2012:
@clem's-yes, slopes are tricky but, there is an 'easy' way to do them. What you do is to work off of the standard slopes. So start from the left, the one with the highest incline. Copy that one into a new window and set up the grid. Remember, the slope with the highest incline is two tiles. Once you copy it into a new window, you copy your horizontal tile and paste it on both ends. This way you see how it all connects. Then you paste your horizontal tile on the original slope, but don't anchor it yet in order to change its angle. Once you do that, you can begin to connect the ends. Depending on the horizontal tile you made, more or less work will be needed to have it connecting correctly. There's more work to be done here, but it is a start.
