How has music production been going?

Also are you guys planning to do anything new or interesting with music or sound?

Like the question before, are those Yoshi drums we all know and love gonna accompany any new tracks you guys include? :)

Music is a tough one... We had a lot of trouble getting a music guy to stay for more than a few days.

Also, its very difficult to get us all to agree on a particular style of music. But, something will be done.

I'll try to answer a couple of those:

What will be released: everything we did to make the game. That will range from scrapped levels to photoshop files i used to make tilesets. That way if someone wants to edit something or make something better, at least they can do it from the source. Our goal is to make NSMBW hacking 10x better than any other Mario games to hack, to do this, we're gonna give the community as much as possible. (please note, for ALL the tilesets i've made, or things i have done, I have not kept the photshop files or good record, many things got lost over the ages).

Coding Question: -Pass-

Circles in Tilesets: You currently have every collision that NSMBW has been program with in the tilesets from Wart & Puzzle, What I would do there is use different sections from the sloped edges, but it will not be perfect, may even glitch a bit. There is currently no work around for this, sorry.

Newer Difficulty: Newer's original goal was to be on par with retail, but I think it's gone a slight bit further, not overly a lot more difficult though. I had to fight tooth and nail at times to get the guys to tone down some stuff or add a few extra power-ups for the 'Pop Like' players. But now the guys are very good at judging their own levels difficulty. I never once complained or suggested they change the difficulty of anything 'bonus' in the game though, things like star coins or extra in level powers ups are fair game to be as hard as the boys want to make them. Often they keep to Nintendo style difficulty for these, but we might be *slightly* harder for a couple here and there. Every player, with some effort, should be able to complete Newer, 100%'ing it is a whole other story!

Heh, I know how you could do a cheesy workaround for the round collisions... Just use a sprite that has round collisions (like rolling hill, or airship wooden gear), make it static (not rotating or spinning) and paint over it with layer 0 tiles.

At the risk of sounding cocky (because that's totally not my style........),if we released Newer right now, as it is this very moment, you would shit your pants at how much cool stuff is crammed in there.

I just looked, and our test pack is 103 mb. And that's without cutscenes, music, and other mumbo jumbo. 103 megabytes of just levels, tilesets, backgrounds, ASM, and a sprinkling of other good stuff, like menu things.

So, there!

Would you say that Newer's difficulty over NSMBW is similar to Super Mario Galaxy 2's difficulty over the original?

Not quite; we don't take a part of a level from NSMBW and make the enemies move superfast.

Frankly, I hope that you guys don't make this game too easy...

I feel the big N has really been making games too simple nowadays... They like to promise games that are for everyone by making the majority of the levels easy and then flinging in a couple with some challenge to them just to appease "hardcore" gamers. Problem is, these harder levels tend to have less attention to design IMO.

A perfect example is the Grandmaster galaxy,(if you guys are familiar with SMG2). Yea it was harder, but that level was just a bunch of blocks floating in space for you to jump on with some reused music; nothing like the interesting, well designed worlds before it.

I dunno. With your hack coming out, I'm hoping that we can get some challenge with a well designed experience, something you generally can't get from retail games or SMW hacks alike. Just voicing my opinion here.

...So with that aside, have you guys figured out what you wanna use Star Coins for or is that classified info. :P

That is a FANTASTIC question!! I hope they use star coins in a shop or something where you can buy power-ups or buy back the mushroom houses on certain worlds rather than just some weird demos in Peach's castle.

Whew... questions.

Difficulty: One of the reasons that I personally dislike hacks is the use of really cheap difficulty. For example, adding craploads of enemies in tight, confined spaces. We are trying to make a nice balance for the "main course", while throwing in challenging parts for the players (like me) who get easily bored with stuff that isn't challenging. Personally, I would like the main course to be more difficult, but I'm pretty happy with how things have turned out. Newer is a game FULL of secret stuff, and lots of areas for the more advanced gamer. In summary, we are trying to make sure that the game can be beaten by moderately skilled players without too much wiimote-throwing, but difficult to 100% for even experienced gamers.

Star coins: I'll never tell.

Sounds promising!

you know asking to much qeustions isnt gonna make the team go faster right all it does is slow them down now im not saying dont ask them but dont ask to much of them at the same time it just gets confusing

Point taken, though I don't think its gonna slow the Newer Team down much if at all, especially since they can chose which questions to answer and which to not.

Using crappy grammar and spelling in long sentences is confusing.

Since I cannot code that is the angle I have gone for, a levels design and gameplay are the 2 most important things to me and I have spent some time designing and adding stuff to tilesets, left it for a while, then designed the level template with my new tilesets including any god tile events and everything else except the enemies, again I will leave that level alone for a while and do the same process for another level, then when I am ready to go back to it I will load everything into riivo and adjust any events and add enemies till I feel its a good level.
Not adding enemies allows me to test everything in that level and make sure it all works, has no glitches and look visually stunning.
Its so much fun that way, it allows you to spend some time on puzzle then on reggie building the level template then riivo for testing and adding enemies, backgrounds music ect . . .
This way seems to give your brain some time under the surface to plan out everything (my brain always seems to be throwing ideas at me for a level once I have an idea hahaha)
I SO WISH I COULD CODE.
But am also excited about the extra content coming with the NEWER GAME, new type of reggie ect . . .

Honestly, I could care less. I know for a fact that Newer will contain bugs, and parts that people won't like. But the positives will overwhelm almost any negatives.

Plus, I'm fairly certain that you won't see Newer crashing on every other level.

Definetly, there is a lot of work left but I'm positive the boys can do it in under 8 months.
