But if you try to check for a system update it says you're up to date?

That just means this trick simply doesn't work on the PSP.

EDIT: Actually, I don't see your request for the file, maybe the link is wrong...

I just filled in the Primary DNS and moved on and it comes up

I saw one connection, but it resulted in a 404. Try the connection test again now.

Yeah man it works but only the( system update works )

It says i have the latest one but the playstation store tells me i need to update so sony have a different way to check people on the psp.

Maybe sony is gonna do that on the PS3 too, :(

Anyways thanks man. :)

Hah, I have no idea what you did to make it work now, but I see the version checks, yeah. So it's just not going to work, too bad.

We'll see if Sony changes this on the PS3; people have been using this trick for years now and it hasn't been fixed yet.

I just have my webserver logs, which does tell me how many people are requesting the updatelist files and such.

But, for the record, the DNS server doesn't log requests, so I can't spy on what websites you're all visiting on your PS3s >.>

Hi Guys,

Thanks to aaron, I was able to get this set up on my home network. I am using a windows 2k3 server and IIS. The server is also my Domain controller.

Below are the steps I took to get this working

1. I added an additional internal IP to my Web Server
2. I created a DNS zone on my DNS server for ps3.update.playstation.net
3. Within the ps3.update.playstation.net zone, I created an "A" record for * and pointed this record to my new internal IP
4. I created a new website in IIS on my server and assigned the new IP to this site
5. I created the following directory structure in my webroot (update\ps3\list\us)
6. I copied the PS3-updatelist.txt file directly off of Aaron's server (Thanks Aaron!) ;)
7. I copied the ps3-updatelist.txt from arron into the above directory
8. Since my PS3 was already configured to use my internal DNS server, I just turned my PS3 on and it worked. :P

Actually, at first I put the PS3-updatelist.txt in the root directory of the website I created and it did not work. I then took a look at my IIS logs and saw that the PS3 was looking for the update\ps3\list\us directory structure :twisted: . I created the structure and then put the PS3-updatelist.txt in the "US" directory and that fixed it.

Hopefully this post will help someone out there! Sony should eat shit and die for this. How can you sell a system with a feature where you can install linux and then one day just remove that feature? That is Bait and switch! As far as i know, that is not legal and someone should sue Sony over this one. The whole reason I went with a PS3 over the cheaper xbox was because it was also a linux computer! WTF Sony! :idea: :idea:

Hi Aaron,

That is not my business but as you are drawing a lot of attention to your solution, I would suggest you to change that phrase posted in the webpage 67.202... to something else, you know, more subtle. I bet there are a lot of people checking the site related to that ip address.

What, no love for The Offspring? That message has been the default no-domain message for years :/

Would you prefer that I just redirect to japaneatahand? :P

EDIT: But it's so entertaining to google "67.202.81.137 dance"... Only japaneatahand could top the wtf factor methinks.

I too have setup BIND9/Apache according to the instructions on here and it works like a charm.

BIND is running chroot "/var/lib/named" and directory "/var/named";
is also specified in the options, which is why file is so short compared to the previous example given in this thread.

To summarise, I put the following in /etc/named.conf:
Code: Select all
zone "ps3.update.playstation.net" {
        type master;
        file "master/playstation.local";
        check-names ignore;
        allow-update { none; };
};

I put the following in a new file at /var/lib/named/var/named/master/playstation.local:
Code: Select all
$ORIGIN .
$TTL 3600       ; 1 hour
ps3.update.playstation.net      IN SOA  ns1.domain.local. ns2.domain.local. (
                                11         ; serial
                                900        ; refresh (15 minutes)
                                600        ; retry (10 minutes)
                                86400      ; expire (1 day)
                                3600       ; minimum (1 hour)
                                )
                        NS      ns1.domain.local.
                        NS      ns2.domain.local.
$ORIGIN ps3.update.playstation.net
*                       A       192.168.1.253

For Apache I have a simple web server configuration where all domains point to the same place and are dealt with according to mod_rewrite. I just put the following rules in my root .htaccess file:
Code: Select all
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^([a-zA-Z0-9_\.]+)ps3.update.playstation.net$
RewriteRule .* http://192.168.1.253/updatelist.txt [L]

The updatelist.txt is from http://pastie.org/900791 as posted earlier:
Code: Select all

I could change lolz.com (the path to each firmware file) to also point locally but this should never be triggered anyway as we are spoofing that its up-to-date. It may come in handy for anyone hosting custom firmware however, should it ever happen.

All references to 192.168.1.253 should naturally be changed to the IP address of your Apache server.

Well, it's not an entirely required thing since Sony allows you to simply place firmware updates on a USB drive. They entirely rely on the strength of their file encryption and signing there, enough to not care where the file comes from :P

Could be cool as a way to keep a "custom firmware" updated, though we'll see if doing this through the normal update methods is even possible.

Your DNS will not going to be down if too many people use it ? Sony can't do anything ?
Thanks

Nah, I can't imagine a slightly-used nameserver using that much traffic, and it's only serving a small file once per connection. I suppose if a LOT of people use it there might be issues, but I doubt that many will ever use it at one time. As for Sony... I'm sure they could make it required that you have 3.21 to connect to PSN, but maybe not until the next update. I'm not sure what their infrastructure is like right now; this hole has existed for a long time and people have known about it, so dunno why it would change now.

I don't mean that. Can SONY contact your DNS Host to close your DNS ?

I can't believe they'd be in the right to do so, it'd be like them taking down geohot's blog because they don't like what he says. What would the point be? Anyone can host one at home themselves; there are much better / more effective ways to prevent this than taking down one host.
But can they? They could try I suppose... And I have no idea what the outcome would be.
