Absolutely everything is allowed in this here thread, aside from legitimate discussion. Please use this topic appropriately.

That being said, the topic is now about potatoes.

Very 8-)

Regarding a post that was in the previous thread. It would be awesome if Nintendo added the spiked pillars to their next big 3D Mario game.

How about this.... A Challenge: The person to ask the most intelligent question about our game in the next day or two, wins 3 cookies and 4 internetz from me personally.

I will also do my best to answer any and all questions i deem worthy of a response.

P.S. just a heads up to you guys, the more mature and on-topic this thread stays, the more often the Newer guys are gonna wanna drop by, like me. I know if this thread is full of song and dance, I'm gonna start dropping by a LOT less. It's really up to you...

So, inspired by Pop006, I wanted to give this a try.

How do you guys organize your project, I know you meet in the IRC channel but do you have for example any boss of some kind? I´m looking to start my own little project soon, but I have no experience at all organizing this kind of stuff.

Thanks :)

Wow, an excellent question almost immediately, kudos MarioBros, kudos.

Basically, we all hang out in our private team room, pretty much as often as we can. We do a lot of team work and team discussions there, but just as often we just idle and chat with our friends about the most off-topic things you couldn't even imagine. We are more than just a team because of this, we are now very good friends. We help each other with computer issues, wii problems, even general life stuff (these guys helped me pick out my girlfriends Christmas present). So basically we hang out there all day and that's where most if not all of our work and organizing comes from.

We also use an array of different sites to help organize things. Pastebins for textfiles, along with some Google Doc's to keep planning organized, and then filesites where we can share our made levels and tilesets quickly to show each other how things are progressing and to ask questions and for help.

About the "Boss" thing, no there is no one leader as such. We've always pride ourselves on being 100% 'community' orientated, with every member of our team being as important as the next guy, with having just as much say and voting power on an idea (we hold a LOT of votes). But that being said we also kind of lead our areas of expertise in a way. Skawo&Antnee kind of heads the level department, I head the tileset/image stuff, treeki the coding stuff etc etc etc.
But we are very much a team, we have our disagreements and even fights sometimes, but we always manage to move past it for the good of the game. We work real hard making this and we try to have fun testing it together as well holding "streaming nights" or friendly competitions just to get the team playing the game more to work out the bugs and kinks.

If you go to set up your own team, let us know, maybe we can give you a few pointers which should save you months of work and effort, probably end up helping your project get better, and who knows, if you can do something worth a damn, maybe we'd even work side by side with you and your team. Good Luck!

Probably not so good question.

How's the posting of levels and tilesets going?
Do you post let's say 4 to 5 levels per month?
Or do you guys just post levels whenever they want?

If you don't want to answer or is it a stupid question, just ignore it then. ;)

But this is a VERY important question.
How do actually post cookies on the internet?

But thanks if you respond to it. :)

We have already well exceeded the number of levels that retail has, by a significant amount, as well as added at least 50% more tilesets, some being extremely simple edits or color changes to match new levels, while others are 100% new design from scratch.

We don't have a set goal to "Post 5 levels this month", some weeks we might have 1 new level submitted, other weeks we might get 10.
The file site we use has instant updates, so we can watch the level makers build their levels as they are designing them. It's kinda fun to watch a level progress as the guys make them.

About tilesets, we are almost done with tilesets now. We have just about every one we need to complete the game, minus maybe 2 or three real hard ones I've personally been toying around with, but can't seem to get just right.

I'll try to get one of the guys to update the NEWER UPDATE thread with official numbers on our levels and tilesets asap, but be patient as many of us are often busy.

Nonononono! Add a :kooky: emoticon! (yes, I misspelled it on purpose)

Also, a question:

How many members are on your team? Will NewER be runnable on Dolphin? (I'm assuming no) Other than exceeding quantity of tilesets, have you managed to improve on them otherwise? Does the Toy Train™ still exist? Have there been any mods to the game's physics, or does that remain the same? How did you animate the logo?

[/questions]

(Yes, I said 'a' question (I LIED!))

Number of Members: Right now idling in the room is 12 members, of those 10 are very active. In total we have approx 20 people on the team, give or take... maybe a few more if you count people who only come around every 2-3 months and then do some work.

Newer on Dolphin: We are releasing a Riivolution pack of files that will be playable on Wii with the Retail disk and will require a lot of asm codes to run properly. There will be no illegal files released by us, so therefore no ISO done by our team. If you can make the riivolution pack work with dolphin all the more power to you.

Improved Tilesets: We never fiddled with retail tilesets very much, as they are very good as is, some slight edits like maybe adding an extra piece here or there were done, but nothing major to retail Tilesets. The new tilesets however, being my personal work, I think are done quite well and many have new items which lead way for a HUGE amount of variation and new cool design in levels.

Toy Train: It's still on our file server, although its been remodeled completely about 3 or 4 times now. I'm honestly not 100% sure what its current plan is but my vote is that it would end up in the final version of our game.

Mods To Physics: If you mean running speeds or jumping heights, No. The game itself very well done and this being the first major hack to include major asm, I'm not sure if its really necessary. We toyed with low gravity settings and that stuff but generally it doesn't work out near as well as if you just design a clever level with existing physics.

The logo animation is a Banner/Layout (brlyt) edit, fairly simple if you know how to do it (or have the right people on your team)... it's the system people use to make custom disk channels for their apps.

oh and pop you're almost never posting stuff, (as far as i know) but now you are. :D

Edit:
And here is the most off topic thing of the day:
yesterday was my birthday (12 i know young),

The game is written in C++ (a programming language), and translated to machine code using a compiler (so the Wii's processor can run the code).

ASM is the human-readable form of machine code. To "ASM hack" typically means to edit the game's code to change how it works.

Over the past year I've spent tons of time figuring out how the game's code is structured so I can modify things.

Most useful naming is removed from the compiled code (since it's not required when the game is being run on a Wii) which makes it far harder, since I have to figure out what each code block does myself.

I have a question, one that has been bothering me for ages.

Why can't I download Riivulution?
I have been watching all the walkthroughs and trying them out, but none of them seem to work. I have a few reasons that I think may be the reason why.

1. My S.D. Card has to enter my computer through my printer- I've put the folders on it but it dosn't show up on the Homebrew channel, maybe because they come up as photos or something?

2. I have the newest version of Homebrew-
I don't see how this would stop me but all the walkthroughs i've seen seem to have an older version.

3. My dad got some guy to mod my Wii so I could play pirated games ( Which is annoying because I DON'T support video game piracy) He got something called neogamma- if you know what that is- so maybe that has something to do with Riivulution not working.

It would be very kind of you if you could tell me what my problem is and how to fix it.

P.S. Happy Birthday kevinh7, have a cookie (::) :D

Hi there, I've been watching this whole process of the game development of yours and I'm REALLY impressed. I'm doing also a game (all on my own) in a mix of M&L RPGs and Luigi's Mansion gameplay. But it's not about it that I wanna talk about.

The thing is: I'm a very good digital painter, specialized on Mario. Nowadays I'm covering every single galaxy from the SMG2. Here's my account on DA:
qwedfgbnm.deviantart.com
If you guys allow me, I'll do some paintings related to the already shown levels - some sort of promotional stuff - so people will see new stuff regarding the game and yet nothing new will be shown.
If you guys want to, you may even e-mail me with levels you may want a draw or two to be promoted without showing screens or anything!

Anyway, my name is Hugo and I really would like to help you guys, and since the only thing I'm good at is this, I'm offering you guys what i can do. BTW, I don't know how the tileset stuff works, but if you guys need a helping hand on drawing them, you can count on me!

OH yeah I think I know the NES thing, but I won't spoil ( W*** *I**S ) <<< if it's it, you guys probably will know what I mean....

This is probably not a worthy question but...

About them star coins. Are they going to be spendable? Do you need all of them in world X to unlock new levels?
