M&SG's NSMB Wii Texture Hacks

M&SG's NSMB Wii Texture Hacks

Postby MnSG on Wed Sep 22, 2010 1:32 am

I managed to get hold of a NSMB Wii ISO on my computer, and as a result, decided to expand my horizon with the said game. Now, not only will I do custom levels, but I'll also do texture edits. However, there's no specific place to show texture hacks for this game, so this thread will have to do for now.

First is the XML document that I use...

Code: Select all
    <wiidisc version="1">
       <id game="SMN"/>
       <options>
          <section name="File Replacement">
             <option name="NSMB File Replacement">
                <choice name="Enabled">
                   <patch id="nsmbfolder"/>
                </choice>
             </option>
          </section>
       </options>
       <patch id="nsmbfolder">
          <folder external="/nsmb" recursive="false"/>
          <folder external="/nsmb" disc="/"/>
       </patch>
    </wiidisc>

Anyway, here's what I've got to show. This post will be updated whenever I release a new texture hack.

Blue & Yellow Koopa Troopas - Download
Note: Download contains two ARC files.
Image

Super Mario World Yoshis - Download
Note: Green is unchanged; red replaces yellow; blue replaces light blue; yellow replaces pink.
Image

Red Larry - Download
Image

Spikeless Spike Top - Download
Note: Texture also affects the Giant Buzzy Beetle.
Image

Dark Bones - Download
Note: Texture also affects the Giant Dry Bones.
Image

Shadow Bowser - Download
Image

Shadow Bowser Jr. - Download
Note: Download contains 3 ARC files.
Image

Night Backgrounds - Download
bgA: A602, A702, A802, A902, AA02, AB02, AC02
bgB: A602
Image

Red Spike - Download
Image

Brown Stone Spike - Download
Image

Burning King Bill - Download
Image

Snow Cloak Lemmy - Download
Note: Download contains two ARC files.
Image

Gray Cooligan - Download
Image

Orange Fire Chomp - Download
Image

Green Wiggler - Download
Note: Download contains 4 ARC files.
Image

Rainbow Hair Iggy - Download
Image

Shadow Thwomp - Download
Note: Texture also affects the Giant Thwomp.
Image

Textures for this game tend to be placed in the following directory...

[ISO]\Object\[File Name].arc

Therefore, to use these texture hacks with Riivolution, while using the XML document shown above, place them in the following directory on your SD card...

[SD drive]\nsmb\Object\[File Name].arc

No offense, but I made this thread specifically for my own texture edits. However, you can still choose to make that kind of topic if you want; I don't want the responsibility of keeping track of everyone's texture submissions anyway.

Chronological reasons. You see, in Super Mario World, you first meet Green Yoshi (Yoshi's Island 2). Then, when you go to the Star Road, via the Donut Secret House, you first meet Red Yoshi (Star World 1), then Blue Yoshi (Star World 2), and then Yellow Yoshi (Star World 3). And of course, I do like Red Yoshi.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Yoshi eggs always appear in the order of Green, Yellow, Light Blue, and Pink in single player mode. Therefore, to go with the chronological flow, I modified the egg textures so that they follow the order of Green, Red, Blue, and Yellow.

However, for some strange reason, when the eggs hatch, their textures revert back to normal; couldn't figure out what file(s) controlled the textures for the eggs when they hatch.

Hey, there seems to be a problem with your very cool red larry. It won't extract and gives error msgs - unknown method in larry.arc and no files to extract.

Must've been the compression method that I used for the ZIP file. I went back and fixed up that download, along with the others so that that problem doesn't happen. Best of all, I updated the files without having to change the download links.

Try the downloads again to see if you're able to extract the files through Windows Explorer.

I'll likely be doing more in the future. After all, I didn't download the NSMB Wii ISO onto my computer for nothing.

Yup, I'm the same person from the Mario Kart Wii forums, SmashBoards forums, and Kitty Corp. forums. You see, I did a lot of textures for Brawl, a few for Melee, and a few for Mario Kart Wii, before I started doing texture hacks for NSMB Wii. I have a full texture gallery (mostly composed of Brawl textures, but textures for Melee, MK Wii, and NSMB Wii are also involved) that you can look at, if you're curious.

Updated with Shadow Bowser and Shadow Bowser Jr.. The Koopa Clown Cars have also been modified, but they'll look a lot better when used on an actual Wii system.

It's because there are two files with the same name in the game. You must edit the Riivolution XML and tell which files are to replace. MnSG, you could put up a XML for your texture hacks.

I use the following XML document setup...

Code: Select all
<wiidisc version="1">
   <id game="SMN"/>
   <options>
      <section name="File Replacement">
         <option name="NSMB File Replacement">
            <choice name="Enabled">
               <patch id="nsmbfolder"/>
            </choice>
         </option>
      </section>
   </options>
   <patch id="nsmbfolder">
      <folder external="/nsmb" recursive="false"/>
      <folder external="/nsmb" disc="/"/>
   </patch>
</wiidisc>

When using this document, to use my texture hacks (or hacks owned by others for that matter), place them in the following directory...

[SD drive]\nsmb\Object\[File Name].arc

Regarding Bowser and Bowser Jr., their file names are...

Bowser = koopa.arc
Bowser Jr. = koopaJr.arc

If you're wondering about the recursive variable, refer to the following statement...

recursive - boolean - optional - Defaults to true and tells Riivolution whether to go looking in subfolders for other files to replace. This option only works when the disc path is rooted and set to a folder.

I think that that guy was just placing the files in the nsmb folder. This caused Riivo to not to replace any, since there are two in the disc and they're different and they could cause a crash.

That can happen at times. This is why I've stated to place the texture edits in the Object folder.
